VIDIYAL LEARNING CENTRES

About Vidiyal Learning Centers

Vidiyal Learning Centers are safe learning spaces established within the village to supplement the sub-par mainstream education that rural children receive through low-resource government schools. Children are engaged in a range of activities pertaining to a holistic development curriculum during after school hours and over weekends. Additionally, each child is supported through individualized mentorship to navigate through their personal lives with courage and confidence.

At the heart of Tarunya Foundation’s commitment to empowering rural children lies the Sivalingapuram Vidiyal Learning Center (VLC). Established in 2020 in the village of Sivalingapuram, Tenkasi district, VLC became a nurturing space that catered to the holistic development of about 35 children aged below 16 years. Through after-school sessions, workshops, and community projects, VLC focuses on enhancing academic knowledge, life skills, creativity, and self-awareness. Over the years, the center has evolved into a hub of learning and curiosity, fostering a sense of belonging and encouraging children to explore their potential.

Stories of Hope

"During one of the reflective sessions, I realized that I have been underestimating myself and that led me to behave selfishly with everyone. I was surprised to see my friends support and empathize with me while holding space for me to learn. I am very strongly practicing Empathy and Commitment as my values. My English buddy call with Vishal anna is supporting me to improve my English Language skills and I am also learning punctuality from him."
Nandhini, VLC Student
"Here we are not only learning skills but also ways of living life. I have started to understand the importance and ways of being a responsible citizen. I feel glad to see the progress I have made in my English skills. I feel confident speaking in English in a group. I am also being supported step by step to plan and work on my dream career. Through monthly calls, my mentor and I create a learning plan and curate tasks that will help me achieve my goals."

Pavithra, VYLP Student (B.A Economics)

"During the COVID-19 lock down, our children were tired of spending time at home watching television. Vidiyal Learning Centre supported them through this period by organizing sessions and activities at the Centre, encouraging reading books in the Vidiyal Library, practicing spoken English, sharpening their existing talents through practice at the center, and buttressing instructions in academic subjects for children unable to attend classes."
